AND WHILE IT'S ONLY A PILOT PROJECT IN WATSONVILLE .. BUSINESSES HOPING IT'S A SIGN OF BETTER TIMES AHEAD.. THE CITY COUNCIL UNAMIOUSLY APPROVED THE PARKLET PROGRAM BUT IT MUST GO BACK FOR A SECOND READING NEXT MONTH.. IF IT'S APPROVED.. THE HOPE IS TO HAVE THE PARKLETS CONSTRUCTED BY EARLY NEXT MONTH.### HERE'S WHERE L Local and national elections & political news, delivered to your inbox Watsonville approves construction of parklets for downtown restaurants The City of Watsonville is jumping on the parklet bandwagon. Tuesday they approved the construction of two parklets in the downtown area so restaurants can do outdoor dining.“It's going to be a pilot project for one year, and the hope is to help out some of the businesses during the pandemic,” said Watsonville councilman Felipe Hernandez. One site being considered as a possible location for a parklet is at the corner of Main street and Maple avenue right outside the Slice Project Pizza restaurant.Despite Santa Cruz county being in the red COVID tier that allows for 25-percent indoor dining, the owners of Slice Project Pizza have decided to stick with takeout only. Just two weeks ago the county was in the orange tier which allowed for 50-percent indoor dining.“It’s like taking an educated guess I guess just trying to predict what will come so we just decided to keep our doors closed but with the parklet, it does give us the opportunity to invite people over and people are just craving that ability to go outside,” said co-owner Brando Sencion. But many restaurants are also craving more business and Watsonville city leaders hope the parklets will help generate that.“For other restaurants especially in downtown to have a parklet would be a huge difference because now you have the option of this outdoor capacity plus what little minimal space you can have indoor… I think it's totally a game-changer for a lot of businesses to be able to do that,” Sencion said. The city council unanimously approved the parklets but it must go back to the council next month for a second and final reading. If approved the parklets could be constructed by early next year.“People have been really excited about this because they want their opportunity for their businesses to thrive, you know, and they've been under the pandemic… in a situation where it's been hardship,” said councilman Hernandez. - Located off I-75 in Sarasota County, Mote Science Education Aquarium is bound to become a landmark.  "This is a site that is assessable for over three million residents to get to in less than 60 minutes and where 43 million vehicles drive by this site with passengers from all over the world every single year," said Dr. Michael Crosby.  The groundbreaking for construction is a moment Mote's president and CEO Michael Crosby has waited for.  "It's so incredibly important that we have a much more ocean literate public as a whole," said Dr. Crosby.  Mote has led research in red tide mitigation, coral bleaching, and ocean acidification. They hope this site will help engage and open the minds of students with STEM education.  RELATED Mote aquarium reopens with safety measures in place "Oceans need us. We need to do a better job of making sustainable good water and food. We won’t be able to feed ourselves from natural wild stock," said Mote's board chairman Sam Seider.  Support has come from donors, the state and both Manatee and Sarasota Counties. The aquarium is expected to have an economic impact in the area of $280 million from construction and nearly $28 million yearly.  "Having this out here will be a huge benefit not just to the local communities, but to area schools, people traveling to the state of Florida. It will be a destination that people want to come to," said Congressman Greg Steube.  RELATED Mote scientists join expedition to investigate mysterious blue holes A destination that will give students hands-on learning and an understanding of the oceans.  "All of those K-12 classes, STEM classes, up to 70,000 students a year will be coming through those STEM teaching laboratories," Crosby said.  As a child, Mote's late founder Dr. Eugenie Clark's love of science and the ocean grew as she spent weekends at the New York Aquarium.
